I have a new iPhone which I am still learning to use. It is connected to my home internet and I have not used it outside the home. Why am I being charged £1 a day for “data”, as yet I have made no phone calls or texts except 1 test call to my home phone to check that it worked! I honestly thought there was no charge for internet use if connected to a network

If you run out of credit you wont be able to use the phone. You have to make a chargeable call or text every 6 months and top up every 999 days to keep your sim active.
Without knowing what tariff you are on, there are various ways to top up here. Scroll down to PAYG

No I have turned off mobile data. Is this necessary with all tariffs or is it peculiar to pay as you go. I was under the impression that if your phone was connected to wi fi then no charges were applicable to your plan. Is it necessary to turn off mobile data if you wish to connect to wi fi
