Sim card not recognised

I upgraded my phone and received it a week ago. I received a new sim and have put it in my phone however it is not activated. I've done everything it says to do online but none of it has worked. My phone has the sim card image with the exclamation mark and reads emergency calls only. I cannot make or receive calls or texts and obviously can only use over WiFi. Does anyone have any suggestions please!?

@TabJD Use your old sim, if it's the same size. If it isn't the size you need, see if your old sim has perforations. You can make it the correct size.
