Can't change to 2G on Lumia 1020

Hello all,

 

Just wondering if there's a particular reason that 2G can't be selected as the data option on my 1020?

 

I understand when there's no 4G or 3G it will drop to 2G… but sometimes in order to preserve battery for a long time, or if not using data much (ie just need phone for calling) I prefer to force 2G.

I'm starting to think that my 4G 1020 (and in theory any 4G phone that doesn't have the option to force 2G) can't actually send data via 2G at all.

 

It's difficult to test it myself seeing as I can't force 2G and live in London where most areas have 3G, or at least an intermittent 3G signal so it will fluctuate between 2G/3G/4G.

 

Does anyone have any idea whether this is true or not?

Data still works on 2g but is so slow some apps time out before they get any idea they are connected.

So long as the phone shows a G for GPRS or E for Edge and not GSM it should still have data facility though in common with 4G not concurrent with voice as with 3G, and as MI5 says a lot slower (comparable to old dial-up speeds).

Nice one guys… I was sitting in a 2G area for a while on the train last night and I think I had an E connection and it was slow but it did load. I think I'm just impatient now, possibly because I'm getting used to 4G speeds?
