Best app ever, saves me a fortune texting to Berlin. Trust Apple to want payment though!

Excuse my ignorance but does this app require that that both the sender and recipient have the software installed or does it convert to/from sms/mms on the fly?

Also, is there a version that will run on a Windows or Linux pc - to allow free, direct messaging between pc's and phones other than email?

Both parties need to have the app installed on their mobile but as far as I know there is nothing for PC. Another bonus is that you know when the message has been read.
