Carnival, or Fasching, in parts of Europe that border the Rhine and the Main rivers, especially in Germany:
Fasching is Germany's carnival season. It starts on the 11th day of November at exactly 11minutes after 11am and ends at the stroke of midnight on Shroud Tuesday - often referred to as Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday in the UK (the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday).

I had never heard of this carnival season @pgn, interesting one!
I'd be curious to know if anyone's attended some of these celebrations before - maybe @ComaChameleon?

ALAAAAAAAF!
I was in Cologne often on Karneval-Friday. Many partys all around the city, music for free and booze.
Cologne has a huuuuuge celebration on 11.11., but never were there. Many start partying at 6 am that day.
We say Karneval here or in dialect Fastelovend/Fasteleer.
CAVE: Never ever scream the false Narren-scream! It's different from area to area. We take it serious

Like Alaaf (Cologne and my region), Helau (Düsseldorf), Narri-narro (somewhere in Baden-Würtemberg)
If you say "Helau" in Cologne it doesn't fit and people don't like it
