Why would they do this? Why not just buy a BlackBerry Q10?

Did they do market research before developing this idea, or is it just because Ryan Seacrest wanted a keyboard on his iPhone?

BlackBerry have today filed a lawsuit against Typo because of copyright infringement, ie the blatant copying of the BlackBerry Q10 keyboard:
