Only thing I hate about Windows 7 is the constant updates, which even more annoyingly always want to install at crucial moments when I'm about to shut the PC down to go out.

You can control Windows Update to only install the updates when you want them.

This is not an issue with Windows 7 and is very simple to do:

I keep looking BOB but haven't been able to justify it - yet! The one thing putting me off is that they don't have a disc drive for downloading CDs. I'm a bit of a dinosaur and still buy CDs rather than downloading! I could probably adapt though!

If your computer is configured to install updates at shutdown you don't have to sit there and watch while it does the install. It will shut itself down and then finish the install the next time you boot up. What's annoying about that?

I must admit I did visit several shops a few times to make my mind up.

I already owned an external drive so that was no biggie for me.

The MacBook Air shone out to me due to its battery life, portability and the power under its hood.

I just need an excuse to buy one...

When Windows 7 updates (which doesn't seem to be that often) I leave it to it - as the other poster said (sorry, I can't rennet who it was) there is no need to watch it.
