With luck nobody here is involved with this, but as there is a risk of some of the 2845 letters being sent out to totally innocent O2 customers, I thought it would help to post this update:

IP addresses are all they need to prove address (presuming a neighbour isn't using your wifi or you don't have malware)

However my Internet is set via DSN my ip changes with each log on.

I could be wrong but doesn't the accuser have to provide irrefutable proof that the infringement happened? Time and IP address aren't exactly foolproof by any means.

They have to provide more concrete evidence surely? It wouldn't be hard for a person to use someone else's computer as a proxy (presuming they're tech savy)

In my limited legal knowledge I believe even I could refute these allegations if they were made against myself.

There is very little chance of anyone actually paying any intended charge, as if this article is accurate, GE have no intention of pursuing anyone through the courts, hoping instead that people will pay by feeling inimidated by their letter:

No way of course of knowing the accuracy of the information here.

I received a letter from O2 yesterday saying the same thing.  The problem I have is that I know without any shadow of a doubt that I am not responsible, nor is my brother or mum who I live with.  I'm more than happy, as is everyone else, for them to have my/our computers and check for themselves that I/we havent downloaded or uploaded anything from this company or any other.  We dont have static IP's and our network is passworded.

I'd like to say i'm not worried because I know we've done nothing wrong but I am worried because of a potential fine etc.  I'd happily go to court to challenge anything they say but it seems like its a losing fight and will cost more in the long run.

The good thing is that atleast 02/Be gave the citizen advice number so people can contact them and they are well aware of this issue so they can really help you out.

90% people have a dynamic ip and my ip changes very frequently, heck if you turn off your router for 10 minutes you will get a new ip address.

Looks like 02 sold each ip for £2.20 and plusnet has challenged the case so they won't be required to hand out their customers details.

Hopefully I won't get the letter or anyone who hasn't downloaded their films, if you do get a letter contact citizen advice straightaway.

O2 IP addresses are sticky and unlikely to change often, they can last over a year without changing.

You can turn an O2 router off for months and still retain the same one.

Also O2 were forced to hand over the IP addresses by a court order, they were entitled to charge a fee for this.

Not at all, you're entitled to be anxious and a bit cross that this has happened.

Please keep us up to date with how you get on, I don't think you'll end up paying anything.

It was reported in the earlier articles that their evidence is flawed.

I've also read that his income dropped 90% which has spurred these frivolous lawsuits. I haven't found mention of any sucessful claims being made, I believe he is relying on embarrassment/fear to gain money without having to provide legitimate evidence.
