Well in the absence of any other figures and based on the fact that this whole thing has blown up over a handful of photos on social media and some guy deliberately bending his phone and using a considerable amount of force to do so, I'm willing to accept the quoted figure

I would suspect that a few more will attempt to bend theirs in an effort to get a new phone...just because they can....:smileywink:
It also adds to the media hype...and publicity...

And deflects from the real problem of dodgy software.
But it couldn't have been "engineered" as the share price has dropped.....but not significantly.
Sept 25 2013 = $68.79
June 26 2014 = $90.90
Sept 12 2014 = $101.66
Sept 25 2014 = $98.26

Could you do me a little experiment on your iPhone 6 Plus which is more really to do with iOS 8.
Load up the O2 community forum, direct Safari to request the desktop site by the pull down menu ,and attempt to add a picture in from your camera roll via O2's Rich Editor.
On mine I get as far as choosing the picture size and actual picture ,but then the little loading bar does nothing and it times out.
Doing this on iOS 8.0.2 with the method you mention, here's a test image.
