A flying warehouse over your head

Hey guys,

Amazon have recently filed a patent for a "flying warehouse". The idea is to have an airship at around 45,000ft which would be sent to areas where demand for goods is expected and then dispatch drones from the airship carrying the individual deliveries.

It's hoped this system would help with the issue of the relatively short range of drones, which are limited by the size of the battery they can carry. Smaller airships could then be used to restock the larger warehouses and even transfer staff.

What do you think about this? Are you happy to have a flying warehouse servicing your area or is the idea a bit much?

10 to 20kg should cover the average order. It will be interesting to see if that make this a viable delivery option.

Depends how far up they are when they drop that 10 to 20kg....run gif.gif

They don't, they land on a landing pad with a targeting qr code on, release the clips and take off.

Object detectors prevent it from landing if any object is detected in near vicinity of pad. If object detected, it returns to Amazon air Base.

At point of delivery, cameras stream to an operator who can see 360 degrees around the drone.

For sure! I really don't think they or us are ready for this yet....

I kind of agree, but it is and already operates to a dozen or so test customers in Cambridge or somewhere.

To be honest...unless they can reassure me that the drone will land safely in my back garden and send me a text to say it's arrived....they can clear off with it....Cat

That's exactly what they do.

In fact, the text is sent during descent

Yes, comes printed onto a fold up circular pad that you open and peg into ground when expecting a delivery.
