... so I switch my laptop off at the on / off button ... & loose what I'd been typing
which must be one of the 1st things we were taught not to do when I did some word processing over 22 years ago
Any ideas ?

It's a thing built into Windows 10, I had the problem too on install on my hp laptop.
Basically it stops the cursor moving whilst you are writing and prevents accidentally tapping on the touchpad and moving the cursor. Sound like a good idea but in reality is crap and annoyingOh its a Win 10 problem? What a silly idea. (No wonder it's never happened to me on Win 7....)
That's a really crap idea. I use a mouse with my laptop (also Win 7) and all I need to do is disable the touchpad using Fn and then the appropriate F key. Why does microsoft complicate things, especially for users who aren't tech savvy, by introducing a feature like that?

Wait!!
Jane can you confirm, the issue is that when typing, if you try to use the mouse, it does nothing for about 5 seconds.
Each time you write it's like the mouse freezes out?
If so I know exactly what's wrong.
The screen showed no mouse icon = no arrow cursor or blinking cursor ..... this has happened to me twice now, but I'll do as you suggest & see how far I get

It's the new mouse timeout timer.
Jane do exactly this and report back..
Search Mouse in the searchbox at the bottom of the screen;
Choose Mouse & touchpad settings from the results
Choose Additional mouse options
Click the ClickPad tab, then click Settings…
Click the Advanced tab
Set the Filter Activation Time slider all the way to 0.
@viridis I've bookmarket this post for future use, thank you
