need to change my contracr number, had it over 10 yrs, getting too much spam

Get a new SIM and switch your contract. Call CS on 202. You get 1 free number swap.

Have you reported the spam? 
Texts or phone calls?

I wouldn't be so quick to change your number till you have tried getting the spam stopped.
