First, the promised code for verification took 2 hours to arrive, then it asked me to add a title to my details, then, having done that, it demanded a bloody passport photo, then it sent me back to get another verification. This is the absolute pits and the only thing that damned well keeps me with 02 is the absolute mucking hassle of switching providers. I am going to simply notify my bank to stop paying the bill so that I can get rid of them once and for all

So o2 want to stop someone getting into your account, by wanting you to verify your identity, seems reasonable to me..
Go ahead and cancel your direct debit, and see what happens... it will involve them destroying your credit file, been passed to a DCA and possibly a CCJ against you..
To switch providers is very easy.
1. get new contract / payg sim
2. Get PAC Code
3. Give PAC to new provider
4. Number is moved
5. o2 account closed
Piece of water..

Guide: Cancelling Your Contract
Just not paying your bill will trash your credit score and have bailiffs at your door.
