I just called O2 looking to upgrade,
right now i have an 18 month contract 600 mins, 1000 txts and unlimited web for £35.74 pcm with "gold" insurance for another fiver.
If i want to upgrade to the same thing (or as close as i can get) now it costs £56 and i only get 1gb of data.
Come on O2, sort it out!

Well you won't get what you want as deals have been long gone for a good couple of years on o2. If you find a better deal elsewhere and you have good coverage, haven't a need to ring CS every so often and don't mind a little bit of hassle on transferring over: don't hesitate to leave o2 for it.
Not being sarcastic but its the advice you'll find on here as we all agree with you!
Or you could do sim only and buy your own phone. As a matter of interest, which phone are you looking at for that deal?

o2 wont give you a contract on the amount you specfically desire, they have set amounts & tariffs && they wont change just because you feel its not the one you want

My arguement with O2 is that I don't want to change the package that I'm on. I have been able to upgrade previously keeping the same deal. Why the change and no explination other than "that is what we offer" for the price increase with a service reduction.
I'm not bothered about the handset but I prefer HTC. I was quoted the same amount regardless of which handset i picked.
In the last 9 years I have had an XDA, XDA II, XDA III, XDA Exec, XDA Mini, HD2 and HD7 with the only change being i had to sign an 18 month contract when i got the XDA exec.
I don't want a 2 year contract, it is crazy that they have become standard. I don't really want an 18 month one but for a reasnoble handset I would.
Insurance costs are now double what I pay, this is provided by a 3rd party not O2 directly so why can't I keep my existing policy? I have only had to call them and update the handset model when i change (as O2 have NEVER done this despite me purchasing both the handsets and insurance through them).
The reason for not wanting to leave O2 is that I live quite literally in the middle of nowhere and O2 is the only network that gets any reception (tesco mobile, etc would probably be OK).
It's also annoying that I have an unlimited data bolt-on, the biggest O2 offer now is 2gb.
Data usage costs O2 nothing yet they charge the most for it. Crazy!

Why not keep the deal you have now and buy your own sim free or O2 locked handset?

Try Giffgaff, It runs on O2, is Payg and they have unlimited Data still.
They dont have any customer services and all the help is done through the forum, but this may be you best bet to keep you unlimited data and keep the o2 signal.
I know that some Tariffs of GiffGaff are changing, so please make sure you read every thing before making the jump.
Other than that, o2 will offer you no more than 2GB and neither will tescos im affraid.
Data at present is one of the biggest problems the networks have in causing congestion, 4G is the way forward, but this im affraid will also bring it share of issues.
Three has unlimited data, but they have also now said they may run of of capicity soon.
Customer are more demanding and networks at a time didnt probally invest as much as they should. The networks are now investiing heavily, but its a catchup game im affraid.
