This morning the CEO of O2 was on Radio 4 and said the following:
The chief executive of O2, Ronan Dunne, told the Today programme's business presenter Simon Jack about the advantages of the 4G network.
He said that while O2's 4G network will not work with the iPhone 5, customers will be able to exchange their iPhone 5s free of charge for a phone that will be able to make use of the faster connection.

When I finally get through to one of the O2 "advisors" they don't know anything about this and just tell me to wait until September.

What the actual hell?!?!?!
Why is this tailored purely at iPhone 5 users?? What about all the other people who took out contracts between September and March who didn't get a phone that can use 4G?
And can someone explain why the iPhone 5 that is currently being used by people can't use 4G, but the new one that can be upgraded to can use it?
Only o2 could answer that but the iphone 5 was sold as a 4g handset (by apples own marketing) but not on 800mhz so that is why I guess they did do the promise to stop people defecting to EE
And Apple have now bought comms chips that do world wide 4g according to rumors but that may not even be ready so I guees the promise means you can swap to any 4g 800 handset if you want to.

Because it won't be the iPhone 5. It will be the iPhone 5S, or the iPhone 6, or whatever they decide to call it.
And I totally agree with you about all this being aimed exclusively at iPhone users.

That sort of makes sense then I suppose...
However, it'll be interesting to see what happens with us Z10 owners who have a 4G capable phone yet the option for 4G doesn't appear in the mobile network settings...yet!

You can go into any O2 store and get a 4G sim. It won't appear in your settings yet, but you'll be ready when and if it does. It may not appear in your settings if you don't take up a 4G tariff. I don't know how all that's going to work yet.

Customers who took out contracts between September and March had the option to take a 4G device but obviously decided against it. O2 are doing this for iPhone customers simply because Apple took the decision to use a spectrum that was only supported in the UK by one network, EE.
If you look at the price promise it states that O2 will pay 25% of the upgrade fee for an iPhone 5 customer. This same offer is also available to non-iPhone customers in the form of a fast-track upgrade - so technically anyone can take advantage of this and upgrade to a 4G device on Refresh.

I've been told it's just a tariff change, so doesn't affect the length of contract. No idea if there are any cost implications yet, though probably will be if there's any change in the data allowances.

I purchased an Iphone 5 on release day, it was advertised as 4G when we got it, this was CLEARLY shown on the O2 website as one of its features. I it appears I wrongly expected it to then work with my 2 YEAR O2 contract on 4g when it became availabale which they now want me to pay for an upgrade and take out a new 2 year contract.
I know they said its 4G and it is indeed a 4G phone but I think then trying to hide behind the fact its a 4G phone but just not their 4G when they knew we would be struck with it for 2 years is really dishonest of O2.
This is the ifnal nail in the coffin for me with them, they have gone form the best customer service to the very worst in my eyes in the last few years and business customers are being treated very badly.
Had to stand outside a shop to get the phone because they would not accept pre-orders for business.
No 1 year ocntracts unless you lease it (Vodafone do!)
Promised me the best deal then I find non business users paying less than me fo rthe phone.
VERY short sighted of you O2

Strange when this phone was released there was a lot of discussion here and everyone knew it wouldn't work on the O2 version of 4G.
It's also why this offer was published at the time:
