Say Goodbye to Unlimited Data Tariffs

Anonymous

Looks like O2 are going to follow AT&T's lead by getting rid of the Unlimited Data tariffs for smartphones and iPhones.

Doesn't even look like they're goig to do an unlimited data bolt on!

This could get very expensive!

Just found this on Which Website

Your online bill should be able to tell you your data traffic as well, but don't ask me how, as I never look at my bills, I just heard someone else mention it

sorry, posted my last whilst you were, but as i say have found it now. watch this space...

Note they haven't announced the price of the phones yet. The new iPhone 4 is certainly not going to be cheap - especially for PAYG customers. They surely have this information already but are sitting on it. Without doubt it would be too much to dump on their old and new customers all in one day.

But factoring in the cost of the phone, this is a fantastically shoddy deal for all 2010 smartphone/multimedia savvy customers. The smartphone future is now and they know it but they want to throttle the speed of progress by penalizing people who use the phones in the way they were intended.

They had exclusive access to the UK iPhone customer originally, hoovering up as much custom as possible, and must surely have predicted exponential smartphone usage.

The whole point of multimedia use of phones is for them to be used in a multimedia fashion. If O2 can't keep apace of the tremendous growth of this sector then they don't deserve to be in the business at all.

I have just read on Yahoo that this is going to effect current customers and not just upgrading ones.

So is this not going back on the contract they offered me and breaking it?

I've checked my usage too and it is similar to the above BUT..
They key issue here is..

1. As customers, we are getting a lesser service for the same/more money as we were

2. With the introduction of new functionality, iAds, bigger more data intensive apps, HD content being bigger to download than lower quality content and that fact that Apple are likely to allow "Face Time" over 3G at some point in the future.

Are these limits really enough and have O2 actually thought this out?

The point for me is this:

O2 are saying that iPhone customers are using on average around 200MB/month
O2 are saying that they cannot cope with the demand from their users
200MB/month is well below, not even close to, the service they are offering of 500MB/month
Therefore O2 are admitting that they are not able to offer the service they are selling

If the average ends up at 200MB/month, those few people who are taking a third of the traffic must be using a serious amount of data - surely much more than you'd expect from a single mobile phone user without being suspicious about what they were doing. So why aren't they taking care of these people, and looking after the network for everyone else whilst offering a great service, by using a fair usage policy or some other more intelligent scaled system of charging???

To me, it just doesn't add up. We need more quantitative information and more than this vague use of "a lot more than 500MB".
