Outside EU charges!

After a recent trip to the middle east, where i was very careful with my usage, rejecting most calls as I didn't want to be charged the ridiculous tariff they have in place. Only to return home & see that I have been charged £1.50 to connect to my voicemail & a further £1.25 per minute for the length of any message left. I have incurred about £40 on my bill for 1 & 2 second calls, I'd have been cheaper answering the calls!! I have informed O2 hoping that they may help me reduce these charges but they are not interested. Their customer service is non exsistent & so when my contract is up it'll be time to move on.

Yes, this has happened many a time before unfortunately, you still get charged for voicemail when abroad as by rejecting the call you have technically diverted the call from your handset in the middle easst back to the UK voicemail number.

The only way to avoid it was to turn off voicemail before you left or turn your mobile off before you left the uk signal and then any calls would be directed through to the voicemail from your last known location in the UK.

You should always turn off voicemail before going abroad. You should have come here before you travelled and we'd have told you the voicemail charges are extortionate.

You've ripped me off as I go there a lot and when I was with 3 they never charged for unanswered calls or messages left! Plus you have the facility to text customers when their data usage exceeds £20 but not when your voicemail costs exceed £20. Lets be honest you must make millions a year from 1 & 2 second calls to customers voicemail.

This is only a customer forum, no O2 staff here.

It's easy to get frustrated when the answer is no, but these are the normal charges.

We have been telling people to turn their voicemail off when abroad for years.

I apologise. Yes i realise now that i need to turn off my voicemail. I'm disappointed that O2 do not inform their customers unless the customer approaches them! I received a text on my arrival stating the number i had to call to retrieve my voicemails as the normal number is used by the local police. Its not brain surgery to simply add a few more lines to the text that would state you will be charged for any unanswered calls while your voicemail is on!

It is something that O2 could perhaps make a bit clearer when they're aware customers are going to be using their phones abroad.

Not only should customers be notified about voicemail charges, but they should also be able to disable their voicemail once they receive the notification. At the moment, I believe you can only turn off your voicemail before you leave the UK. Once you're abroad you cannot do it.
