What on earth is going on with O2 in Belfast?

Was there today and my iPhone and iPad both showed 5 bars of 5G but nothing was loading at all. Friend also on O2 had exact same problem

on his devices. My work sim with EE worked fine.

As customers we would have no idea.

Check the status on https://status.o2.co.uk/

Or download the My Network App to monitor and report network problem

https://www.o2.co.uk/apps/my-network

Guide: Is the network down for me or everyone?

Guide: How can I sort out my network issues?

This is not O2 and we are all customers here similar to yourself and cannot answer account type queries.

I know all that, I’m not stupid. Just wondered if others had had the same issue.

I was in Belfast a couple of weekends ago, on a Sunday. Around and in City Hall, at the Christmas Market and St George's Market, and the pedestrianised parts of the city centre - 5G, good signal, rubbish data, especially around Hill St and the colourful umbrellas (nothing at all in The Dirty Onion and Yardbird!)

Most of the snaps and such in WhatsApp only synched-up when we were in Grand Central Station waiting for the next bus heading north after 5pm.

So agreed, @NetworkNorm -rubbish O2 data backhaul in Belfast.

And how was I to guage all that from your post?

OK, so you are not stupid, but maybe work on your manners in the future.

"Thanks, I've tried that", would have been sufficient.

Good point, @Enlli.

For ref, @NetworkNorm - although you may already have seen it:  this 2024 comparison for best mobile networks/coverage in Northern Ireland seems to be quite thorough - but do note any references to 3G in the UK now null and void - O2 was probably the last UK mobile operator to retire their 3G infrastructure, and I think their target was end-2025 (today), leaving only traces of 3G signal to mop-up early in 2026.
