I' d like to know how can I keep the telephone number when being abroad and using another local phone in there. So, I won' t do calls with the o2 number for a while.

Is there a maximum period without doing or receiving any call? I need to charge the phone in that period, anyway?

If it's a PAYG number you need to make a chargeable call every 6 months and top up every now and again to keep it active.

If Pay and Go you need to make a chargeable call every six months.

If Pay Monthly and you continue to pay your monthly bill it doesn't matter how long you are away.
