This is totally down to the information supplied by the retailer, in this case O2. A banking statement can only show the reference number as designated by O2. They could quite easily factor in part of the mobile number as a reference, especially when many customers have multiple accounts for family.
The question is whether O2 will consider making that simple enough adjustment to their payment systems.
