Discussions about O2 and age verification

Just received a text from TPTB saying I need to confirm I'm over 18 to view adult material. Until then, it'll remain blocked on my phone. I don't have a credit card so I'll need to do this in store. Just wondering, I have no particular desire to view pornographic material or register to flirt websites on my phone but if I don't have this ban lifted, will it affect my general day-to-day browsing in any way? Otherwise, I won't bother.
Secondly, when did this come about? Never needed to confirm my age in the past. And why couldn't they have sorted this in store when I bought the phone?

Morning everybody. First time poster so please excuse any errors. I have been reading this thread with interest as i was on the same situation with no credit card and not finding time to visit an o2 store. I contacted o2 via live chat. The operator filled in a form and within 2 hours got a confirmation text. All quite painless.

Talk about annoying and irritating your customers in a totally stupid and amateurish way!

Firstly, this garbage should be opt-in for parents if they want it, not rolled out for every poor sap. Secondly, if your going to use crap like this, then at least make sure the thing works. Tried to Bango my Visa and my Mastercard, both times got the "cannot verify age" message. Repeated a week later and still the process is gimped.

UNBELIEVABLE.

Now they want me to take my passport into some spotty sixteen year old six miles away.

This is typical of bloated British companies where some overpaid idiot has to justify his salary by thinking up stupid schemes.

I actually quite like this post and I agree it should be "opt in". Problem is every mobile does the same thing the same way so getting O2 to change is virtually impossible. For me it was easy to get removed, as I look considerably over 18 I just went into my O2 shop and asked for it to be sorted. It was done in less than 2 mins. I have to say I like the way Giffgaff do it online where you can enter either your drivers license or passport number and it checks you out from the comfort of your own armchair

Wasn't it made the law to have the service opt out? I could be mistaken.

An aweful lot of people will undoubtably even know it exists. I agree with opt out because of the amount of technophobes. However it really should be easier to get it removed. Not everyone has a credit card(I don't)

As a newcomer I have read with interest most of the posts on this topic. I used the O2 website a couple of days ago to verify my age (I'm 57). I have received confirmation that verification was successful. Surprise, surprise, I tried to visit a website recommended by a survey website after verification and was blocked by O2 saying age verification failed.

Needless to say I am using an O2 dongle with my laptop and I am on a monthly contract.

This has soured my previous good impression of O2 and unfortunately I still have over a year left on the contract.

Has anyone successfully managed to have their "age verification" stick or can I look forward to paying every other day for this so called "service"?

Can you try calling CS? they removed mine happily without fault.

Most issues after removal tend to arise because the customer doesn't remember to turn the phone off/on after they receive the text confirming age verification has been removed. Try this, it may resolve the issue.

My Phone has just started blocking me AGAIN after having the block removed at a O2 shop. I am not happy as I do not use a credit card so will probably have to go back to the shop. Which is not on any of my normal journeys. Will try to phone some one though that did not work last time. Will look at another phone service provider as O2 do not seem to be any good!
