Unless you switch off mobile/cellular data then apps will update when not connected to wifi. Switching it off won't stop you using wifi.

Hello GeorgeDoc,
iPhones for example switch from WiFi to 3G when it goes to sleep mode to save battery power.
If you didn't turn off Voicemail before you travelled this can also icur charges.

Yeah I know that. I use an S3 and in the settings I always have the allow data roaming icon unticked so that i dont incur roaming charges. O2 however are indicating that when you leave a wifi area and anything downloading etc. st that time will automatically over ride "the instruction" not to allow data roaming. I find that a bit hard to believe.......surely the downlaods/activity should simply stop when it cannot connect to data services?

As said if you manually turn off 3G and mobile data in the phones settings your phone should not connect to the networks data service and use wifi only.
As you say if you broke the wifi connection by moving out of connection range everything should just stop until wifi connection is re established.

You need to switch off mobile data as well as data roaming.
