BT mast ownership

Just a quick question -  someone I know went into a three store today as they have a problem with the phone - the staff said there mast 'up the road' is owned by BT and has a fault, so we can't find out what the problem is - this sounds like 'fobbing off' to me unless others know differently. Do BT own masts?

They own all the EE masts so if Three have a transmitter on it and the fibre network to the mast has a problem it's quite feasible.
