iphone 4 - it says i have no service and it is new with an upgrade

Please help,

i have just recieved and Iphone 4 on my upgrade,

and it is telling me i have no service or internet, my new sim card is placed inside
why is it not working? does it need to be activated and how?

I am waiting to hear back from the person I bought it from...if its still in warranty I dont want to follow a youtube video on how to fix it myself - no matter how easy it looks to fix it myself!

If you log into Apples homepage their are links where you can enter the iPhones serial number and it will come back with what the warranty status is on the iPhone.
