I send emojis to both iPhone and none iPhone users and I'm never charged for an MMS.

To stop inadvertanly sending a text message as an MMS and thus incurring a 35p charge (think its 35p still for an MMS) do the following.

Go into Settings:

For iPhone to iPhone use iMessage for free.

I can send emoji without any extra charge. I think the sprites take up so many bits. So sends them as ascii unicode and displays them correctly on the other end.
