So, previously O2 after say a period of 3-6 months used to allow you to unlock an iPhone to use a different sim ,say when you're abroad and don't want to pay their Dick Turpin style international rates.

I've since queried this and they've now said as I'm on 'refresh' I'd have to pay the balance of the phone upfront to have it unlocked.

Is this now the status quo or is there a period - which they won't divulge for fear of breaking the official secrets act that will pass and they will unlock it?

The wooly T&Cs won't say anything about a period of time.  I've been with 02 15 years and I fear it's time to hang up on them once and for all.

Normally it's still 6 months after release which should approximately be next month or you pay off your refresh device plan in one go then you can unlock it

I think it's the 'normally' I have an issue with - they wont disclose and would rather I pay off the phone. If they were honest and said - it's 6 months, I'd be happy to wait - rather than fleece me in advance.

Then you will have to wait until they do unlock it as they wont do until they decide to which i get is annoying

O2 never give a timescale when they will unlock the newest iphones after launch. All I can say is that O2 will unlock after a period of time when profits have been maximised. I think after the 6SE is launched, O2 will then unlock the 6S.

I imagine not releasing the date is another measure to prevent the phenomenom of box breaking - which network locking is designed to prevent in the first instance. It shouldn't be too much longer though

I hope so, their international roaming of £150 a month for 200mb is such a bargain.
