My option to turn the Wi-Fi on/off, is greyed out on the off choice, which means that i can't turn it back on and therefore having to revert to using 3g, and the data allowance will not last the month. I have re-booted my iphone but to no avail, just wondering if there are any solutions or what options I can take regarding this problem

Try rebooting your router. Basically just switch it off for a minute or two and then switch it back on and see if the problem has remained.
Other than that, try restoring your iPhone off of a backup (the backup needs to be from a time when you know the problem wasn't there).
If restoring off a backup hasn't solved the problem, then the only thing left is to restore as a new phone. I am confindent that if all else fails, this method will sort out the problem.

Thanks, but I have tried these options and haven't worked, guess I will have to take it to an Apple store, shame that this has happened on the day my 12 month warrenty runs out

I take it that this has only recently occured and it has been ok on wifi previously? Are you on the latest iOS? Have you tried a soft reset holding down the on button and Home button until the Apple logo appears?
Failing this, back up the phone and try a full restore in itunes or set it up as a new device.
Apple customer service is second to none and if it's software related I'm sure they will be sympathetic if you explain that it happened right on the warranty period. Most phone manufacturers now give a 2 year warranty under EU legislation and people have been successful pushing this with Apple.
Let us know how you get on.

I had the same problem (on a 4s) and took it into the apple store who didn't even bother to run any diagnostics - just told me it would be £139 to replace it.
