Been looking on the internet on how to unlock the iPhone 5... Mostly curiosity.
And came across a few sites where they do a IMEI unlock.... I was wondering how they do it? Surely it must be illegal?
But to my main point (Last sentence), is this true?

Mark, when you put a request in via the web it goes to an office team who review it before sending it to apple (or not for the iPhone 5). They also need to review that it is an iPhone, or that it is actually registered to O2, and that its not blacklisted etc.
Depending on the problem will vary what email response you get. As they're auto-typed its a button click for the person checking your request. wrong click = wrong email.

Cheers for the information, Pablo.
I do see a future problem now though when it does come to O2 actually unlocking the iPhone for me and can see Apple themselves getting involved

Apple don't handle direct requests for unlocking - it all goes through the carrier first. They would keep directing you back to O2.

Well, spoke to Apple when the email came back a 2nd time and Apple said they'd get involved as the IMEI was definately an iPhone 5. I think I'll be talking to Apple soon

I've put in numerous requests via the online unlocking form and had the same reply "the imei is not an iphone" but my latest response was ** THIS IS AN AUTOMATED MESSAGE **
Hi,
This iPhone unlatching request has been rejected as there are multiple
unlock requests received.
Thank you,
O2 Customer Service
I'm hoping that as the phone has been out for almost 6 mths they will be unlocking very soon.

Not hearing anything about unlocks yet. Not even whispers. Leads me to think it'll still be a while yet.

^^ Shockingly bad CS in my opinion, every other carrier is unlocking them yet o2 are not .. seems strange to me, I wanted my iphone5 unlocked to put in a work sim whilst out of the country, all my contacts, emails and schedules are linked to my phone before anyone says use another phone.
I have been with o2 for 15 years but in the last few of them I have noticed that they are starting to look after their customers less and less.

Operational decisions aren't run from Spain. O2 is run as a standalone company, with a UK-Based CEO and full UK board. Input from the parent company comes with regular meetings but I imagine they don't decide something like when O2 starts unlocking iphones. I think they'll trust the UK board to decide something like that.
