Roaming in France this weekend

Two of us, both with iPhones on monthly contracts, went to France for the weekend. For all of Friday and Saturday we were unable to get a phone signal on any French network in spite of being in well populated areas. On Sunday morning they finally sprang into life. Anyone else just encountered this problem?

You may want to do a search to see what was happening with the French networks over the weekend. As you were roaming, it wouldn't have anything to do with the O2 network.
