What does it mean when it comes up credit check unsuccessful but took the payment

It means your bank has ringfenced whatever deposit amount your purchase has. If O2 do not accept you as a customer due to credit risk, they will not request the funds from your bank.  The bank should return your money to you, usually within a week or so, @Tianna1 - normal operating procedure, even if you choose to fill your car from a self-pay pump at a fuel station.
