Clarification of O2 Travel Service

I will be going to Majorca soon for a 2 week holiday and will be taking my iPhone 5 with me so that my family can contact me in case of emergency (they're looking after my house while I am away!)

I have read throught the details shown here : O2 Travel but need some clarification on a few things.

Part of the info on that link states, 'You'll only be charged £1.99 for the days that you use data in Europe'.

Does that mean that every day I switch on my phone and it downloads some emails, i will be charged £1.99  for that day? If I turned my phone on every single day for 2 weeks (to check for any calls and maybe some light email checking or surfing) - I take it that will be £1.99 multiplied by 14 days which will be around £27? Is that how it works?

Perhaps the  'O2 European rates' would suit me better as they only charge Data at 46p per MB.

I really am not going to be using my phone that much to be honest - I will be literally turning it on every night (it will be off during the day whilst I am down the beach) to see if I have any calls and maybe just some light 5 minute Facebook/Twitter browsing and thats gonna be it.

Can some advise on which plan I should use?!

you have worked it out correctly.

But at 46p a mb after 4.33 mb the 1.99 is cheaper.

So you need to work out how much data you are going to use a day.

But if it is on free wifi just turn cell/ mobile data off all together

iPhone 11 Pro 256gb on unlimited data
iPad Pro 12.9” 2020 256gb refresh o2 family discount
Apple Watch series 4
My first mobile was in 1995 a CM-R111 from sony on Cellnet.

Hi yes you are correct that is how it works and for that £1.99 a day you only get 15mb each day I think it would be cheaper fir you to use standard rates

Cheers guys - I guess I will have to try and figure how much data I might use.

Don't suppose anyone would know how much data would be used to download say 10 emails per day (no attachements) and to Facebook/Twitter for 5 mins?!!!!!

no idea but reset your iphone data counter and do the same as you expect to do over there and see what it says.

but remember that other apps etc may hijack the data connection.

in o2 travel faq is there not an example of what 15mb should give?

iPhone 11 Pro 256gb on unlimited data
iPad Pro 12.9” 2020 256gb refresh o2 family discount
Apple Watch series 4

....chees for the tip adam:smileywink:

Actually, just having another look at the O2 Travel site and the FAQ does indeed provide the following info (approxamations):

In Europe you have 15MB of data per day.

  • 750 mobile-friendly web pages* or
  • 7,500 text Twitter updates* or
  • 9 min of YouTube videos*
  • Up to five hours of web browsing on a laptop.*

I guess I will just have to see how much data i would use in an average 5 minutes of emailing/Facebooking/Twitter and work out if it is indeed cheaper to use the O2 Travel.

So this morning, I reset all my data counters and then made sure i was not on Wi-Fi and did about 5 minutes worth of Facebooking, Twittering and checking emails and was astonished that it used up 2.9MB of 'Received data'.

I guess, as long as I stay underneath the 4.33mb mark - there is no need to use the O2 Travel service......

...the 'Sent data' was literally only a few Kb but the total was still under what I would receive on the o2 Travel service. Perhaps a few more checks are needed! Cheers adam:smileywink:
