The reason people are annoyed is that o2 CS have told customers that they knew about the shortage 5 days before release but only let customers know at 9pm the day before release. It's not about the fault, it's the fact o2 have spectacularly failed at customer service.

I am not here to defend apple or o2 but I would like to guess that apple told o2 and all other netwoks not to release the news about being unable to supply what was promised until that date and time.

But it is the same every year.

Also I think people are overlooking the obvious point in the story on Fortune (and the implication that is being derived from it by o2), the story clearly says "who enter Apple Stores Friday". This means the sold out or no stock argument only applies to people expecting to walk/queue into an Apple Store and buy one, not what stock allocation will have been shipped to mobile networks ahead of launch. Anyone who thinks the networks get these devices on launch day are naive at best...

Delays are not so much the issue, what has annoyed most people is the very poor communications.

I accept this was always likely to happen, but why do O2 refuse to provide order updates?

Telling me the order status will change when it ships is not good enough. Virtually everything I buy online, even from individuals on eBay, tells me when I can *expect* to receive my item/s. O2 just say, 'thanks for your money, now go away and just wait for an unspecified period'.

These stock shortages are a bit of a joke, Apple know how popular iPhone's are so for them to not meet demand is a bit of a joke.

Just read an interesting piece where a business analyst theorises that Apple purposely throttle deliveries to spread out and therefore boost shipments/revenues for Q4 quarterly results reports. Not an unreasonable practice if you're under pressure to maintain AAPL stock price...

Delays are one thing, which is annoying but understandable.

What isn't is that someone (happens to be my brother) received his phone yesterday (256GB Silver 7 Plus), which he pre-ordered at 17:30 on 09/09.

I ordered the exact same handset for click and collect with a pre-order at 08:30 on 09/09, and I'm still waiting.

So it puts the whole "dispatching in order of when order placed" thing into doubt, which is much more of a concern....
