It's a case of being pro active.

For instance I use iCloud to back up my data for my iPhone.

Basically yes. The type of software running on a phone determines what programmes and apps can run on it.
The more expensive phones have more options and capabilities.

What I am trying to get across is that if you take a backup of your phone it will back up your text messages.
If then, in the future you accidentally delete them from your phone, you will still have a backup of them on your PC.
It was just a tip to stop it from happening again, not to help with the immediate problem.
