Most strange. You have Samsung's own firmware yet you said earlier you have O2 splash screen.... At least you won't be waiting for O2 to send JB update, you should get it when Samsung release it.

I have thought about flashing but worried I'll brick it!

First confirm that your phone is unlocked, ie try a Voda/Orange SIM in it and if it works just flash with Odin (which is what Kies does but without the user interface). No chance of bricking if you follow the instructions correctly.
