Alternatively you could just pop on or make an appointment with your local O2 Guru who could transfer your contacts, pictures, music and text messages from one phone to another.

Are your photos on the device itself or on memory card?

Re your contacts I have always copied them to the sim on the old phone then copied to the device on the new one.

Link the phone to your Google account and copy the contacts to Google. Once you log in to Google on your new phone they will automatically transfer for you.
Photos can be simply copied to an SD card or your computer or sync'd to Dropbox, Picassa etc....

Surely with an Android phone this is the obvious solution as everyone will have a Google account!

You would certainly expect them to have one....
