On my Galaxy S3 I want to get rid of the notification that says "New voicemail " and "Voicemail number unknown". I do not want to use voicemail at all so do not want to set up a number . How can I get rid of voicemail and the notification?

The only way to get rid of a VM is to listen to it and delete it. Dial 901 to listen to and delete the message then dial 1760 to turn VM off.
