How long to swap SIM?

Does it normally take more than a day to swap the SIM from the old SIM to the new one?  

I bought a new phone yesterday, took it home and went online to go through the process of swapping the SIM data from my old SIM (in my old handset) to the new SIM because I would like to keep my number.  The new phone still doesn't seem to work and the old one still has the O2 logo etc more than 24 hrs later.  I have now tried again, in case the first time didn't work.  Should I wait for longer than a day really ... was I being too impatient perhaps?

to cut a story short . I have a new sim but want to keep old number . 26hours ago I had a CHAT with 02 rep. He told me how to deal with SIM ring 2020. Looking @ your info, 20220 is the number ?? BUT 02 still has my old number listed and someone phoned me 10mins ago. Has the sim gone thru ????????

If the call came through on the new sim, yes, it has gone through.
