Hello,

My O2 travel bolt on says I pay a 50p connection charge (in Europe) and 15MB of data for £1.99 but what about texts?

Texts will cost you 7p or 8p depending where you are going in Europe.

I'm going to Spain soon. if I turn off my data so that I don't occur any horrendous data roaming fees, will standard sms still send?

Yes you will still have calls and sms as long as you are connected to the Spanish network. Just turn off mobile data and roaming data and you will be fine. I would also turn off voicemail (1760) before you leave the UK.
