Cannot make calls on arrival outside UK

I arrived in australia but altho my phone connects to a local network I cannot make calls and all attempts say "The number you have called is not connected"

Are you Pay and Go or Contract? Did you call O2 before you left the UK to make sure you could use your phone abroad? If you didn't, I'm not certain if you can set it up if you've already left the country. Someone else on the forum might be able to advise you of that.

Contract. The problem resolved spontaneously after several hours. Why does that happen. It is v inconvenient as I needed immediate phone access on arrival for vital calls.
