Silly question.Just got new Note 3. 4G tariff. Want to play with it a bit before changing my existing number over. The set up requires me to put in phone number. If I put in number that came with phone will it transfer when I get my old number changed over? Also if I just set up as 3G instead can I come back later and change to 4G?

Yes to both questions but I believe that 4g will just work for you once your new tariff is activated.

Thank you. Usually you just shove in the SIM and play but this wanted 'setting up' and I want to get used to it before committing all my data from the other phone to the new one

When I started my 4g tariff it just worked straight off, but either way your details will transfer over when you do the number swap.

Hi @Anonymous and Welcome to the Community Forum,

My 4G started straightaway also.

you do need to be in a 4G catchment area.

Take into account it takes from a few minutes to approx 24 hours for your services to fully reset after performing a sim swap.

Turning the phone off and on or toggling airplane mode on and off helps the reset.

Hope all goes ok for you.

Take care. slight_smile

I appear to be suffering an attack of gross stupidity. This is the third Samsung Galaxy I have had.Never had a problem with set up before. This flipping 4G Sim which the instructions say needs sim swopping has defeated me.To set up on O2 it requires the phone number.I have the sim because I have just signed to a new contract.I put in the number that came with the phone (I don't want to change my old number over till I have familiarised with the new phone) and O2 say it isn't recognised. I can't get any further with the set up. I think I may have to make a journey into town to the O2 shop. Should it be this difficult or am I being completely obtuse? The O2 guru is busy all the time today

Hi

Yes the O2 shop will sim swap for you and go through the process.

If you have a 4g sim and complete the process then as I did I didn't have to use the 4g set up online as it all happened and synced over with no issues.

To add to perform the sim swap just input your original number you've always used. You'll be sent a code and then the process will Start to move your tel number and tariff from the old sim to the new one.

Your problem is that your new sim is blank and needs activating which is normally done by transferring your old sim details to the new one.
This then connects the new sim with your account (at the moment it does not have any account association).
If you activate this new sim it will have to be as a new account unless you do the transfer from old to new.

LOL things are going from bad to worse.I am feeling inadequate. Previous phones I have put in the new SIM and run both similataneously for a day or two till I know what I am doing with the new phone and then I get my old number transferred.I finally got hold of the O2 guru livechat this afternoon and explained that. She asked for the SIM serial number and came back and said she had completed the transfer for me.I hadn't had time to get my info from the old phone onto Kies and back to the new one and now Kies says it doesn't support the old phone but the updated Kies won't load onto my laptop - feeling paranoid. Have tried to do it another way but the download has been going on for about 3 hours now slight_smile  I think I will have to make the 20 mile round trip to the O2 shop and hope they can do it for me if it hasn't loaded by tomorrow. Honestly, I'm not usually this stupid with phones. Can't even get the push email functioning either.   Thank you all for your help anyway. I do appreciate it
