Upgraded iPhone is not delivered and returned back to O2 by DPD

I placed an iPhone 14 upgraded in 20/09 and  the evening I received text from both O2 and DPD that it would be delivered the next day and I chose slot for delivery to my home. On the next day 21/09, I received the text that iPhone would be delivered 12-1pm but it never delivered on the chosen slot. Then, I checked the tracking saying it was just returning to O2 without any attempt to deliver by DPD, I the  phoned them the CS said that they contacted DPD and there was some issues with the package or it’s damaged so returning back to O2 without notifying me. Again, I tried to contact O2 until today they asked me to wait for the iPhone to retuned back and once they scanned the contract is going to cancel and I can make a new upgrade. I just want to ask for an Advice here that how long this usually last for them to get cancelled and why it is taking over a week now. Any ideas? Is there any deadline or can O2 file DPD in case it never return. Very frustrated here as I’m not received the item and all payment is keep running.
