The £6 bolt on per day seems excessive to me - I am in a contract but can I just take my sim out and replace with Australian payg sim?

You can use your contract allowance as you do at home in Australia, if on a Plus or Volt tariff.

If you are PAYG, then yes, a local PAYG SIM and use of, eg, Whatsapp, is your best bet.#
