Just signed up with o2 as part of my virgin package, finding coverage / data etc poor in certain areas of Brum . When I check local signal towers I’m informed there is a problem but this never changes . My company work iPad also works on o2 and the issue stated above has always been there . Come back EE all is forgiven.

It could be access to resolve the issues with the mast, or been able to get parts etc...
The best thing to do is keep logging it in the My Network App.
Trust me o2 is not alone in this regard... where I live one of my neighbours is on 3 and they are still waiting for a mast issue to be resolved think its been 3 months... EE have the same issue and their was a mast on the East Coast that took 9 months to be fixed..
