USA iphone to use in uk

We have an iPhone bought in the USA we have checked that it is not locked to a USA network, we’ve put in an o2 pay as you go sim, put credit on the phone, but it won’t send texts or call uk numbers? What can we do please?

Why is my signal so poor? I live in Bristol and even in some of the main areas my signal is terrible! I travel a lot for work which is why I switched to this network yet in the states I hardly get signal anywhere even with the travel bundle add on
