Question re unlocking an old phone

I have a new phone and a new contract with O2 and kept my number. I gave my old phone to my grandson for his first day back at school...but it doesn't work as they don't have an O2 sim. I read that you go into the my O2 app to unlock the old phone, but that phone has been wiped and I don't live near them to do anything with it. I wondered if I would have a problem with my new phone (and new contract) if I took my sim out and put it back in the old phone anyway...can anyone please advise? I started a call with O2 but abandoned it when they started asking if I was talking about the phone I was on, as I didn't want anything to happen to my new phone!

Best way would be to get the phone setup using an O2 sim then add the Apple ID on wifi @Su1234

Oh do I have to buy a new O2 sim? My grandson has never had a phone before so he doesn't have an apple ID yet and I guess I don't want my apple ID associated with it? I have no clue what I'm doing!

@Su1234

He'll need to create an Apple ID to use the phone.

An O2 sim would be easiest.

Oh right, thank you again. I don't think my daughter will be too happy since she already bought a sim somewhere else but I guess we're stuck with O2 on that one. I've been with O2 for many years but they have never been with O2, so I'm not sure how they'll feel about it...

So can I buy a PAYG O2 sim with no money loaded on it, so he could then get into the phone and set it up and create an ID, hopefully then be able to unlock it?

Yes @Su1234

That would be my advice.

You can order a free sim from here https://www.o2.co.uk/shop/sim-cards/pay-as-you-go

So my daughter got the O2 sim and put it in the phone...it doesn't have any credit on it, it's just a basic sim. This time she was able to get into the phone with the O2 sim, and it already has my grandson's new apple ID on it. However, we can't figure out how to unlock it. She can get into settings, can you tell us how to unlock it please? We thought she could go to phone call and input the code 2945#*870# but that didn't work, we got a screen saying 'error performing request'. Thank you again.

@Su1234

You don't get a code for an iPhone as the unlock is processed on Apple's servers.

Now you have the phone up and running, try to insert a none O2 sim card again and see if it unlocks.

You may have to connect the phone to a PC with iTunes on it.
