It doesn't matter. The phone will drop down to 4G or even 3G.
I also have a 5G sim yet 5G is not available in the area I live. It just used 4G instead. The sims are backwards compatible.

I have also received an email saying I have been sent a 5G sim, but this is very confusing, as it reads:
Your order details Item(s) ordered: POS:O2 5G Postpay SIM: compatible with 5G Devices ONLY O2 5G Postpay SIM: compatible with 5G Devices ONLY £0.00
As I am not in the UK the sim will need to be forwarded by family to me abroad. How can I be sure the sim will work on 4G when my mail says explicitly that it is for 5G devices only?
Edit: I should clarify that my phone is 4G only.

It's very badly worded but what it means is that you will only get 5g on a 5g compatible device.
As @Cleoriff has stated above, 5g sims are backwards compatible with any phone.
