I have just changed my tariff (from 5th March). I have received two confusing messages. The first said 4G access had been turned off. The second said I would now be able to use 5G if my phone is able to use this technology.

How can I ensure I have at least 4G access?

Ignore the first message

All new sims are 4G and 5G enabled now

The message is a generic message that O2 send out but 4G has not been turned off . This usually points to an area which is being upgraded to 5G but 4G will still be available to you
