Yes, you can as long as you meet the payments you'll be fine....

It will probably be a case of a further credit check but there shouldn't be a problem if your payment history is up to date.

Well I tried to do this to mypersonal  account of around 5 years, but failed.

My payment history is superb, but credit history bad in recent years.

However, I got an iphone 5s upgrade via my business account, which was due and also fine, but they wont so much as give me a sim only on my personal account as the computer says no and there is no human in o2 who can overide it.

After chatting to O2 about this I was told NO you can not add a new phone to your existing contract, the only solution is to take out another contract, which then comes with the same checks as a new customer etc..

I think this is down to semantics and your definitions of the words used.

You can only have 1 phone (or SIM) per account, but you can have any number of accounts on your contract......

I have 2 and have just added a third.....

To me adding a phone to my account is something like what EE do.

You have a master account, then you can add upto 4 other devices, which get a new number but share your data.

Anything else is just taking out an additional contract.

OK, wasn't thinking of data sharing, but yes in that case you would be correct.
I was thinking of one contract in my name for example, then my kids and wife's phone attached so I just pay one bill a month....

Yeah that is another way to look at it.

O2 did however tell me THAT was not possible when I asked them.  Obviously it is however as that is what you do.

The lady said it would all be seperate bills and accounts and thus seperate direct debits.

Maybe she was new or something.

You probably need to get the right person.... Some staff seem to be able to do more than others these days 😞
