Unlocking iphone 6s

Hi just a quick question,

 

i have a sim only pay monthly contract coming to an end and i am disapointed with the current deals that are on offer so i am thinking of moving to another provider but to do this i need to unlock my phone.

 

I only have a month left so i need to unlock soon to avoid a charge so my question is how soon after the unlock happens do i have to put in a new sim card? if i go through the unlock proceedure will my phone still work untill next month when i change over??

Unlocking process here.
Your phone will still work exactly the same with your o2 sim after unlocking so do it at any time.
