I have O2 travel on my phone which lets me make and receive phone calls for 50p then free for 60 minutes, but whilst I was away in July I was charged. How come

O2 Travel only covers Europe and you could have been close to a non-European border.

You should always choose manual network selection too as if you may pick up signal from bordering countries not covered by O2 Travel. Also be wary of ferries and their own telecom systems.
